A positioning trip means you leave Singapore by bus or ferry, then start the flight from Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru or Batam. The flight can be priced lower than the same dates from Changi. It is only cheaper once you add the ground transport, the extra hours, and a buffer in case the first leg is late.
Add the bus or ferry, bags, and a buffer hotel if the flight leaves early. Then put that total next to a ticket from Changi on the same dates. The budget airlines from Singapore are often on both sides of this comparison.
An open-jaw ticket is a different shape: one ticket that arrives in one city and leaves from another. A positioning trip is how you reach the airport you depart from.

Take a ferry from Singapore to Batam, then a road transfer to Hang Nadim Airport (BTH). Match the ferry schedule to the flight and leave a gap.
